Privacy Policy
Last Updated: January 2025
π Your Privacy is Our Priority
AI Code Buddy is built with privacy-first architecture. We have zero backend infrastructure,
meaning your API keys and data are never sent to Apra Labs. Everything stays on your device.
TL;DR
- β
We collect ZERO data - No analytics, no tracking, no backend
- β
API keys stored locally - In Chrome's encrypted storage on your device
- β
Never sent to Apra Labs - We literally cannot access them
- β
Only sent to your chosen AI provider - You control which provider
- β
100% offline option - Use Ollama for complete privacy
- β
Open source - Audit the code yourself
1. What Data We Collect
AI Code Buddy collects minimal data, and all of it stays on your device:
π Configuration Data (Stored Locally)
- AI Provider Selection - Which provider you chose (Claude, OpenAI, etc.)
- API Keys - Stored encrypted in Chrome's local storage
- Model Preferences - Which model you selected (e.g., GPT-4, Claude Sonnet)
- Custom Settings - Temperature, max tokens, custom prompts, CSS selectors
- Extension Preferences - UI settings, auto-improve toggle, etc.
β οΈ Important: ALL of this data is stored locally on your device using Chrome's
chrome.storage.local API. It is never transmitted to Apra Labs.
2. What We Do NOT Collect
We are committed to your privacy. We explicitly DO NOT collect:
- β Personal Information - No name, email, phone, address
- β Browsing History - We don't track which websites you visit
- β Command History - We don't store commands you run in terminals
- β AI Responses - We don't see what AI providers send back
- β Analytics - No Google Analytics, no telemetry, no tracking pixels
- β Crash Reports - We don't collect error logs or diagnostics
- β Usage Statistics - We don't know how often you use the extension
- β Location Data - We never access your location
- β Device Information - We don't fingerprint your device
Why We Can't Collect Data
Unlike typical web services, AI Code Buddy has zero backend infrastructure.
There are no servers, no databases, and no analytics platforms. We literally have nowhere
to send your data even if we wanted to. The extension runs entirely client-side in your browser.
3. How Data is Stored
π Chrome's Encrypted Storage
Your API keys and settings are stored using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.local API:
- Encrypted at rest - Chrome automatically encrypts storage
- Isolated to extension - Other extensions can't access it
- Syncs with Chrome Sync - Only if you enable Chrome sync (optional)
- Cleared when extension removed - Uninstalling removes all data
π Network Transmission
When you use AI Code Buddy, here's exactly what happens:
Data Flow:
- You select terminal output text and click the hover button
- Extension retrieves your API key from local storage
- Extension sends request directly to your chosen AI provider (e.g., api.anthropic.com)
- AI provider processes the request and sends response
- Extension displays the response to you
β οΈ Critical: At no point in this flow does data pass through Apra Labs servers.
The connection is direct: Your Browser β AI Provider
4. Third-Party Data Sharing
AI Code Buddy sends data only to the AI provider you explicitly choose. Here's how each provider handles your data:
